As engadget.com reports once again today<\/a>, the fifth-generation iPhone is not expected until September. Until now, Apple had always launched the latest generation of its popular smartphone in the summer months of June or July.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Telekom Is Trying Hard to Get Rid of the iPhone 4<\/h3>\n\n

As is customary with Telekom, just a few days later I received a call from an employee offering me an iPhone 4 in connection with a contract extension. I declined, explaining that I wanted to wait for the iPhone 5. A few days later, as the rumours about a delayed launch became more persistent, I started reconsidering my options.<\/p>\n

The iPhone 4 was not one of Apple\u2019s greatest triumphs. Shortly after its release, it received bad press because of a poorly designed antenna. And the white version has still not appeared, apparently because the white cover causes problems with the camera function.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n

Until now I had hoped that the new model would still arrive in June or July and that Apple was deliberately spreading these rumours to reduce the large inventory of iPhone 4 devices. After all, a smartphone whose antenna is fundamentally flawed does not sell quite as well as planned. Or put differently: an iPhone 4 becomes harder to sell when everyone is already waiting for its successor.<\/p>\n\n

I Insist on an iPhone 5<\/h3>\n\n

All right, then I will have to adapt my strategy to the new situation. The next call from a Telekom call centre is bound to come. I will explain that I insist on an iPhone 5. If Telekom is unwilling to guarantee me a next-generation iPhone as soon as it becomes available, I will let my already cancelled Telekom contract expire.<\/p>\n\n

I consider the latter rather unlikely, however. Until the summer of 2009 I was a very satisfied O2 customer \u2013 and employee. I know that the O2 mobile network has been expanded massively in recent years and can now keep up with Telekom even in rural areas. In addition, over the two years of a new contract I would be tying myself to the provider again for quite some time.<\/p>\n\n
