This can be useful as a backup if the DSL line fails, or even as a permanent alternative. Unfortunately, after one of the more recent laboratory firmware updates my E398 suddenly stopped connecting.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following changes to the FritzBox settings got it working again:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. Connect the Speedstick LTE to the FritzBox and wait until it appears under \u201cHome Network &gt; USB Devices\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"998\" height=\"627\" src=\"https:\/\/michael-hoepfl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/01-Anschluss-Huawei-E398.png\" alt=\"Connecting a Huawei E398 to a FritzBox 7270\" class=\"wp-image-2282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michael-hoepfl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/01-Anschluss-Huawei-E398.png 998w, https:\/\/michael-hoepfl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/01-Anschluss-Huawei-E398-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/michael-hoepfl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/01-Anschluss-Huawei-E398-768x483.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 998px) 100vw, 998px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Connecting a Huawei E398 to a FritzBox 7270<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. Under \u201cInternet &gt; Mobile Communications\u201d, make sure the following settings are used:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; Enable \u201cAllow roaming onto other networks\u201d. If you live near a national border and can also receive mobile networks from the neighbouring country, however, be careful with this setting!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; Under internet access, change the mobile network operator to \u201cOther operator\u201d. The access point must be \u201cinternet.telekom\u201d, the dial-in number \u201c*99#\u201d, the username \u201ct-mobile\u201d and the password \u201ctm\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1004\" height=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/michael-hoepfl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/03-Mobilfunkzugang-konfigurieren.png\" alt=\"Configure Telekom mobile internet access for an E398 on a FritzBox 7270\" class=\"wp-image-2283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michael-hoepfl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/03-Mobilfunkzugang-konfigurieren.png 1004w, https:\/\/michael-hoepfl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/03-Mobilfunkzugang-konfigurieren-300x227.png 300w, https:\/\/michael-hoepfl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/03-Mobilfunkzugang-konfigurieren-768x581.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1004px) 100vw, 1004px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Configure Telekom mobile internet access for an E398 on a FritzBox 7270<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The connection to the Telekom network should now work again.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone expecting full LTE speed will unfortunately be disappointed. According to speedtest.net, the E398 connected to the FritzBox 7270 achieves a data throughput of only just under 8 Mbit\/s, compared with around 25 Mbit\/s when I use the stick directly on a computer at the same location.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/speedtest.net\/result\/2279254726.png\" alt=\"Data throughput of a Speedstick LTE on a FritzBox 7270\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Data throughput of a Speedstick LTE on a FritzBox 7270<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you also want to make VoIP calls over the mobile connection, make sure your Telekom contract permits this function. If it does, VoIP works surprisingly well.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may also want to disable compression. This can be done at <a href=\"http:\/\/speed.t-mobile.de\">speed.t-mobile.de<\/a> (accessible only from the T-Mobile network). Even then, not everything seems to work as it does when the LTE stick is connected directly to a computer.
