And what does the blogosphere think about them? Blog Links are the fastest route to the most important background information and curiosities. Today it is about a king who supposedly wanted to buy Facebook and the secret behind astroturfing \u2013 or, put differently, whether Guttenberg may also have cheated when it came to the number of his Facebook fans.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What does a sheikh do when he sees himself and his influence threatened by a new technology or progress? Naturally, he buys off his opponent with a substantial amount of money. Something like that must have been how a rumour arose that some Arab media even repeated as genuine news.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Allegedly Offered $150 Billion for Facebook<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The American blog DownWires reported that Saudi King Abdullah wanted to buy Facebook for more than 150 billion US dollars in order to prevent a revolution in his own country. What was really behind the story, and how Arab media came to spread it as genuine news, can be read here on Telepolis: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heise.de\/tp\/r4\/artikel\/34\/34306\/1.html\">TP: A King Who Did (Not) Want to Buy Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in Germany it almost seems as though Mr von und zu Guttenberg bought Facebook. How else can you explain a group such as \u201cWe want KT back\u201d having more than half a million members while demonstrations usually attract only a few dozen people?<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jetzt.sueddeutsche.de\/texte\/anzeigen\/520399\">An article on jetzt.de<\/a>, S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung\u2019s magazine, asks the simple question: \u201cWhere do all the Guttenberg fans come from?\u201d It also discusses the possibility of astroturfing \u2013 manufacturing public support by simply buying part of it. Facebook makes that particularly easy. You simply buy a few thousand friends, for example from usocial.net. 250,000 fans were available there for just under 9,000 US dollars.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If only King Abdullah had known that earlier.<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Incidentally, extreme astroturfing should be relatively easy to detect statistically. For example, 500,000 fans among 14,000,000 German Facebook members represent around 3.5 percent. Everyone can take their own number of friends, determine how many belong to \u201cWe want KT back\u201d, and calculate the percentage. In my case it was 2.3 percent.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What does that figure tell me? Apparently 2.3 percent of my \u201cfriends\u201d lack the necessary judgement to realise they have fallen for a fraudster. Worse still, they allow themselves to be used by the Bild newspaper. One possible explanation would be that the movement was kick-started with, say, 100,000 purchased fans. What is your figure?
