In this setup, the WRT54 receives the FritzBox Wi-Fi signal and rebroadcasts it using the same SSID. Computers connected to the WRT54 by LAN cable are on the same network as the Wi-Fi devices. The connection uses WPA encryption. In principle, this configuration therefore provides much the same functionality as a dedicated Wi-Fi repeater.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hardware and Firmware Used<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FritzBox 7270 firmware version 74.04.88<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WRT54GL V1.1 firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (build 14896)<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Configuring the FritzBox<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Basically, I use the FritzBox standard configuration:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>IP address:<\/strong> 192.168.178.1<br\/><strong>Subnet mask:<\/strong> 255.255.255.0<br\/><strong>DHCP server:<\/strong> enabled<br\/><strong>The DHCP server assigns IP addresses<\/strong> from 192.168.178.20 to 192.168.178.200<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These values can of course vary. The following WRT54 configuration, however, is based on this setup.<br\/>Naturally, <strong>Wi-Fi must be enabled<\/strong> on the FritzBox. You should <strong>set the wireless channel manually<\/strong>. This can be done in the FritzBox interface under \u201cWi-Fi\u201d \u2192 \u201cRadio Channel\u201d. Ideally, use channel 1, 6 or 11.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Wi-Fi network name<\/strong> should be set to <strong>visible<\/strong>, at least while setting everything up. Once the repeater has been configured, you can hide it again. Under \u201cSecurity\u201d, enter the following settings:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Security:<\/strong> WPA encryption<br\/><strong>WPA mode:<\/strong> WPA + WPA2<br\/><strong>Wi-Fi network key:<\/strong> a secure key<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Configuring the WRT54<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have not already done so, the special DD-WRT firmware must be installed on the router. The firmware and further information are available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dd-wrt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.dd-wrt.com<\/a>. In any case, start by performing a <strong>router reset<\/strong>. Then connect via LAN cable with DHCP enabled and open the <strong>router web interface<\/strong>. It can normally be reached at the router\u2019s default IP address.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After setting a username and password in the router web interface, it is best to go first to the \u201cStatus\u201d page and then to the \u201cWireless\u201d section. Under the wireless nodes section, start the <strong>site survey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new window now opens showing all available Wi-Fi networks. The FritzBox network should appear here. If it does not, you are either outside the FritzBox wireless range or something is wrong with the FritzBox configuration.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the list of available networks, click <strong>\u201cJoin\u201d<\/strong> on the right. Then switch to the main \u201cWireless\u201d menu and edit the physical wl0 interface under \u201cBasic Settings\u201d as follows:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Wireless mode:<\/strong> Repeater Bridge<br\/><strong>Wireless network mode:<\/strong> G-Only<br\/><strong>Wireless network name (SSID):<\/strong> the name of the network joined above should already be shown here; otherwise enter the FritzBox Wi-Fi network name.<br\/><strong>Sensitivity range (ACK Timing):<\/strong> 0<br\/><strong>Network configuration:<\/strong> Bridged<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then <strong>save<\/strong>, but do not apply the settings yet. Still under \u201cBasic Settings\u201d, edit the virtual wl0.1 interface as follows:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Wireless network name (SSID):<\/strong> the FritzBox Wi-Fi network name, i.e. the same as above. While setting up the repeater, you can temporarily use a different name to verify that the WRT54 is working.<br\/><strong>Wireless SSID broadcast:<\/strong> initially leave this enabled and disable it only after the configuration works and you want to hide the network.<br\/><strong>AP Isolation:<\/strong> disabled<br\/><strong>Network configuration:<\/strong> Bridged<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now \u201cApply\u201d these changes. Then switch to \u201cWireless Security\u201d and configure the physical wl0 interface as follows:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Security mode:<\/strong> WPA2 Personal<br\/><strong>WPA algorithm:<\/strong> TKIP+AES<br\/><strong>WPA Shared Key:<\/strong> use the same key as the FritzBox \u201cWi-Fi network key\u201d.<br\/><strong>Key Renewal Interval (seconds):<\/strong> 3600<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the next step, <strong>be sure to save<\/strong>. Then enter the <strong>same settings again for the virtual wl0.1 interface<\/strong> as for the physical interface. Apply the settings, switch to the main \u201cSecurity\u201d menu, clear all checkboxes under additional filters and WAN blocking, and then <strong>disable the firewall completely<\/strong>. Apply these changes as well.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you now return to \u201cStatus\u201d, the FritzBox should already be visible by its MAC address under the wireless nodes section. Finally, go to the main \u201cSetup\u201d menu once more. Under \u201cNetworking\u201d, add an <strong>additional DHCP server on eth0<\/strong> under \u201cDHCPD\u201d and save the setting.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now return once more to \u201cBasic Setup\u201d and configure the router IPs under \u201cNetwork Setup\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Local IP address:<\/strong> a free IP address on the FritzBox network that is not assigned by the DHCP server. I used 192.168.178.2.<br\/><strong>Subnet mask:<\/strong> the same as on the FritzBox; in my case 255.255.255.0<br\/><strong>Gateway:<\/strong> enter the FritzBox IP address, in this case 192.168.178.1<br\/><strong>Local DNS:<\/strong> 0.0.0.0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After applying these settings, the configuration is complete. You will probably need to <strong>renew the IP address<\/strong> on the PC used to configure the WRT54, or adjust any manually assigned address. The WRT54 should now receive and rebroadcast the FritzBox Wi-Fi network. If the same SSID has been used everywhere as described here, a laptop should automatically switch between the FritzBox and WRT54 networks.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What apparently does not work is switching between the FritzBox and repeater networks while, for example, making a Skype call or streaming a radio station on an iPhone. Unfortunately, the iPhone app I used usually even crashes during the switch.
