But that was about to change \u2013 more on that in a moment. Vodafone, for example, promised me \u201csuper-fast internet of the future\u201d at up to 50 Mbit\/s with the LTE surf stick it sent me. According to its press office, the mobile base station in Roding was designed for that speed (<a title=\"Internet in Stadt und Land: Schlie&#xDF;en die neuen Angebote die DSL-L&#xFC;cken?\" href=\"http:\/\/newdialogpur.p627638.webspaceconfig.de\/2011\/05\/14\/internet-in-stadt-und-land-schliessen-die-neuen-angebote-die-dsl-luecken\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">you can read the test and comparison with a DSL connection here<\/a>). In the end, however, download and upload speeds were usually no higher than 6 Mbit\/s.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not necessarily bad for a wireless technology, especially on the upload side. Even so, it is still a long way from the up to 100 Mbit\/s with which LTE was announced. Telef\u00f3nica\/o2 then provided me with a Huawei LTE router and a special SIM card. It is worth knowing that o2 LTE was not yet being officially marketed in Munich at the time. After all, the technology was initially intended to cover so-called white spots \u2013 remote locations where no DSL connection, or only a very poor one, had previously been available.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I was not particularly surprised that the 4G symbol printed on the o2 LTE router did not light up. What confused me much more was that the display next to it showed a signal strength of three out of five bars. I opened a web browser and, sure enough, my Google homepage loaded just as it would on my usual DSL connection. When I then opened www.speedtest.net to see how fast the connection was, I could hardly believe my eyes: more than 25 Mbit\/s download, over 10 Mbit\/s upload and a ping (response time) of under 40 milliseconds.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"589\" height=\"395\" src=\"https:\/\/michael-hoepfl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ping-o2-LTE-mit-stick.jpg\" alt=\"Ping with o2 LTE stick\" class=\"wp-image-3836\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michael-hoepfl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ping-o2-LTE-mit-stick.jpg 589w, https:\/\/michael-hoepfl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ping-o2-LTE-mit-stick-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 589px) 100vw, 589px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ping with o2 LTE stick<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WOW! That is on the level of a Telekom VDSL connection \u2013 without the hassle of laying a cable. In practice, it means the loading bar on HD YouTube videos races ahead. Thanks to the high upload speed, emails with 10 MB attachments are sent in seconds and large files can be uploaded to cloud applications such as Dropbox much faster. It almost feels like magic.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"741\" height=\"452\" src=\"https:\/\/michael-hoepfl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ueber-25-Mbit-mit-o2-LTE.jpg\" alt=\"More than 25 Mbit\/s with o2 LTE\" class=\"wp-image-3837\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michael-hoepfl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ueber-25-Mbit-mit-o2-LTE.jpg 741w, https:\/\/michael-hoepfl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ueber-25-Mbit-mit-o2-LTE-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 741px) 100vw, 741px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">More than 25 Mbit\/s with o2 LTE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The LTE router is simply placed somewhere in the room and plugged into a power socket. The laptop connects to the router via Wi-Fi and you immediately have an internet connection that simply rocks. Unfortunately, consumers cannot yet enjoy these extremely high download and upload speeds, because the SIM card Telef\u00f3nica\/o2 provided to me is not commercially available. Anyone interested in the LTE service who lives in the Munich coverage area can buy it even though it is not yet officially marketed there.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SIM card supplied to consumers is limited to 7.2 Mbit\/s download and 6.8 Mbit\/s upload. Even those transfer rates should be enough to watch YouTube videos smoothly and send large files quickly. Limiting consumer connections to 7.2 Mbit\/s also has an advantage for individual users: at peak times, when many people are browsing via o2 LTE at the same time, enough bandwidth remains available for everyone.
