For conventional file storage or shared working directories, this is generally more than sufficient.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Docker, Paperless-NGX and Synology Drive are combined, however, SMB quickly reaches architectural limits. The decisive issue is less Paperless itself than the role of Synology Drive as an additional actor in the filesystem.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Architectural principle: clear responsibilities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This setup consists of three clearly separated layers:<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Docker container<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>contains application logic only<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>no persistent data inside the container itself<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mounted directories (Consume, Media, Export)<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>form the persistent data layer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>must be monitored reliably by Paperless (file events)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Synology Drive (optional, selective)<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>accesses <em>individual<\/em> directories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>generates additional filesystem events<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this interaction to remain stable, the filesystem needs to:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>correctly represent Linux filesystem semantics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reliably propagate file events<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>allow clean UID\/GID mapping<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why SMB is problematic here<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SMB introduces several difficulties in this architecture:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inotify events are not reliably propagated to the container<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>additional metadata and locks created by Drive can lead to unexpected behaviour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>file permissions are abstracted rather than represented unambiguously<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>multiple \u201cinstances\u201d working on the filesystem at the same time increase complexity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially for the consume folder, which is monitored continuously, this can result in documents being processed late or not at all.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why NFS is the better choice here<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NFS fits much more cleanly into this architecture:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>native Linux semantics without protocol translation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reliable Inotify events for Paperless<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>unambiguous POSIX permissions (UID\/GID)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>clear separation between application (container) and data (host)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Synology Drive can still be used \u2013 but selectively and in a controlled manner, for example only for the Scan_Inbox.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion of this architectural decision<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using NFS here is not an end in itself, but a deliberate architectural decision in order to:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>run Paperless reliably<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>enable Drive integration without compromising file events<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>keep responsibilities clearly separated<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The container remains stateless, the data resides on the host, and Synology Drive is used where it makes functional sense \u2013 rather than indiscriminately everywhere.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Target Directory Structure<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The storage structure was deliberately divided into three logically separate areas:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Scan_Inbox<\/strong> \u2013 inbox for new documents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Archive<\/strong> \u2013 final, structured archive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Export<\/strong> \u2013 optional export path<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This separation simplifies not only configuration, but also maintenance, troubleshooting and future extensions.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create the Folder Structure (Synology via SSH)<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two shared folders <strong>\u201cPaperless Inbox\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cPaperless Archive\u201d<\/strong> should already have been created through the DSM interface. The reason is that this folder is actively monitored and sees frequent file changes, for example from scanners or uploads from multiple sources. A clearly separated, externally connected consume directory is therefore appropriate.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Paperless Archive containing the archive, export and trash directories, by contrast, remains a conventional bind mount directly on the Synology\u2019s local filesystem. Paperless therefore accesses the data directly without a network protocol, while users can continue to access the same shared folders normally via SMB. The type of Docker mount has no effect on whether those shares are accessible to users.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" aria-describedby=\"shcb-language-4\" data-shcb-language-name=\"YAML\"
